April 2022 Arbor Day Tree Planting Resumes WPBF will bring back the White Plains Arbor Day program this year by planting two trees at the Highlands Middle School. After a two-year pause this year's dedication ceremony will be held on Friday, April 29th at 1 pm. A Black Gum tree in memory of William C. Smythe III, a beloved Highlands instructor who spent more than 40 years teaching math in White Plains schools and who passed away in 2018, is a gift from the Highlands Middle School staff. The second tree will be planted in honor of John M. Iodice, owner of Riemann Auto Body and a lifelong resident of White Plains. The Eastern Red Cedar is a gift from his wife, Colleen Iodice. |

Arbor Day Tree Planting has been a signature program of WPBF since 1984. Each year an individual may permanently honor or remember a loved one by donating the tree. Contact us at info@wpbf.org. |

The dedication ceremony will be held at the main entrance to the Highlands Middle School on the left of the parking lot in the grassy area. Visitors are welcome to the outdoor event. It is be best to park on one of the city streets near the school since the school parking lot may be full. The 1 pm start time is a change from prior years' morning program, necessitated by student testing. |

Prune Spring Flowering Bulbs As daffodils, hyacinths and tulips fade snip off their flower stalks. This encourages the plants to store energy in their bulbs instead of setting seed in the flowering head. Leave the foliage alone until it fades naturally. The plant uses its leaves to nourish next year’s flowers. P.S.: To camouflage bulb foliage, interplant annual flowers around the bulbs. By the time the leaves die back and turn brown the annuals will have carpeted the area with blooms. |
