Providing for Our Pollinators

Help reverse pollinator decline by planting native plants

We are excited to let you know that WPBF will have a booth at the White Plains Farmer's Market on Wed., May 19, 2021. Pollinators of White Plains, a program of WPBF, will be offering a small selection of native plant plugs while supplies last for free or a donation amount of your choice.

Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Weed) displays stunning orange blossoms that attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators. The  Monarch butterfly lays its eggs on its leaves.

At our Farmer's Market booth, you will receive instructions on how to plant and maintain the plant plugs in your garden or outdoor pots. You will be asked to complete a form with your name and email address in exchange for the plant plugs of your choice.

Pollinators of White Plains has joined the challenge to help arrest the decline of pollinators caused by loss of habitat. Visit us on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/pollinatorsWP

By using native plants, eliminating the use of pesticides and reducing manicured lawn practices we invite more pollinators into our ecosystem.
As a supporter of the regional Pollinator Pathway project, WPBF wants to see swaths of native plants throughout our city to welcome bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators.
For more information, visit the White Plains page of Pollinator-Pathway.org by clicking here:  https://www.pollinator-pathway.org/whiteplains

The use of native plants in resident gardens is becoming increasingly widespread. We are fortunate to have the Native Plant Center at Westchester Community College in our local area. As the first national affiliate of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center in Austin, TX, The Native Plant Center is a treasured resource. You can also attend classes at their Native Plant U.   https://www.sunywcc.edu/about/npc/

Percy Grainger's Home

Last month's edition of this eNewsletter reported that the grounds of the Percy Grainger Home and Studios would soon be bursting with the 500 daffodil bulbs donated by WPBF.  If you did not get to see the bulbs in bloom, here's what it looked like in late April.  For more information on the residence and information about The Percy Grainger Society, visit  https://percygraingeramerica.org/
