Beat the Covid-19 doldrums

Try tulips, daffodils, cherry trees

Everything is canceled – weddings, parties, concerts – while we maintain a safe distance from one another, waiting for this dreadful time to be over. It hits home as some of those we know succumb to the coronavirus.

Things that enhance our lives become memories. We cannot socialize as we used to. We need to be with family and friends, but we’re hiding from the enemy.

How can we cheer up?

The all-volunteer White Plains Beautification Foundation reminds you that spring has arrived!  All around the city, daffodils and tulips are actually dancing, and not standing 6 feet apart.  They are hugging one another with promise of more to come.  This past fall, 31,400 new daffodil bulbs, straight from the Netherlands, were planted throughout the city, joining those already there.

The cherry trees have blossomed.  WPBF President Mary Ann DeRosa guarantees that your doldrums will disappear if you take a drive or a hike (remembering the 6-foot rule, of course, just as the trees do) downtown to Tibbits Park, along North Broadway (Route 22) from Lake Street to Westchester Avenue. It’s an incredible sight of Kodak moments. Turn on Lake Street and you’ll see many more in Turnure Park. You’ll see dozens more in the Mamaroneck Avenue median leading out of the city toward Mamaroneck.

The memorial cherry tree planting was started by WPBF in 1969. It continues to dazzle the eye today.

Enjoy your adventure among the blossoms, and stay safe!
